Our work
SwitchCoal

What if

we could prove embracing renewable energies is economically profitable?

What if it only takes 10 days to build a digital data platform from a vague briefing that shows how the switch from coal-fired power plants to renewables can be not only sensible but also highly profitable?

What if we had received this briefing 10 days before COP28 and we had made it happen?

Impact areas affected
Shortly
The SwitchCoal Project is a regenerative potential analysis which assessed the impact and economic feasibility of switching all worldwide coal plants to Solar-Wind-Battery by 2030. We supported giving this studies a face, make it explorable and recognition it deserves at the COP28.

Context and Motivation

Need for action

Spearheaded by a team of scientists, economists, and innovators, SwitchCoal aims to reduce global CO2 emissions significantly and mitigate the impacts of climate change. With a concept to earn profit by keeping global warming within 1.5°C and a load of calculations and a data with them, they asked for support. With a great timing of 2 weeks before presenting this potential analysis to the world at the COP28, the translation of the data into a consumable web format took place.

The requirement to make the calculations and the regenerative idea and business plans behind SwitchCoal quickly graspable for wider masses was combined with building giving SwitchCoal the visual look and attention it needs and deserves. We developed the communication and the web experience and even the SwitchTool.
The goal, to have a stunning presentable web experience ready for the COP 28 was the pressuring part, to support the vision and mission of SwitchCoal ‘From coal to clean.’ was the simple one.

Challenges

Things to solve.

Challenge

01

How do we make scientific content visible that is not normally accessible to the public?

Challenge

02

How can we communicate and address the topic to simply grasp the idea and make people curious?

Challenge

03

How can we develop a page and make it within 2 weeks only to be ready for the launch of COP28?
Approach & process

Development in the fast lane.

This could be a text about a typical design process. Could. But let's be honest. We had just 4 hours to accept or cancel the enquiry. And another 13.5 days to deliver. So this is going to be a brutally honest spotlight on how we approached it. Ruthlessly transparent. Unadorned and raw. Like this pink stroke.

Impact

Big deal or small dust?

In just 2 weeks, we created a data-driven website for COP28, made it into the news with SwitchCoal and created a gateway to prove that sustainability can be profitable.

SwitchCoal is a marvellous example of how ecology and economy can go hand in hand, although it sometimes sounds absurd to see them acting as a couple. SwitchCoal has proven that sustainable energy is not only necessary but can be highly profitable. Adding fuel to the fire of all climate critics.

Our take aways
01
For meaningful impact, research and design must go hand in hand
02
Interdisciplinary teams outperform any homogeneous unit
03
Time is not a limit when it comes to fighting for the good cause
04
Low-code platforms like Webflow are the key to success in so many cases
